The Tīwhas join Nōku te Ao Capital E to celebrate Pride

This March, we’re excited to be taking part in Wellington Pride Festival with a free, drop-in tamariki workshop.

The Tīwhas are a drag queen collective that blends kapa haka, comedy, live vocals, choreography and te ao Māori storytelling. Their goal is to create joy, connection, and acceptance through art.

“We want to be the representation we needed when we were tamariki. For some, we might be the first drag performers they’ve seen, or the first time they’ve encountered Māori culture in this way. We celebrate ourselves and each other – and if people learn something along the way, that’s a bonus.”

At the workshop, The Tīwhas will be helping tamariki show their true colours by making colourful paper flower crowns inspired by queer fashion icons Carmen Rupe and Marsha P. Johnson.

This will be our first ever workshop held in our new home Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, Wellington Central Library. It will take place on level two, in Ngā Pou Ruahine, a versatile room designed for the community to use in different ways. We’ll be gathering under the Earth Mothers, a beautiful rawa by Darcy Nicholas which honours wahine and the role they play in nourishing tamariki.

We hope to see you there on Saturday 21 March. Learn more about the workshop here.
