Capital E is bringing back Wellington’s favourite day out for children, The Great Scavenger Hunt, this Wellington Anniversary Weekend. Bring your young astronauts and join in the space race on the Wellington waterfront from 10am-4pm on Saturday 21 January (rain day Sunday 22 January). Grab a map from Capital E at 4 Queens Wharf and get exploring!

Young scavengers will visit some of Wellington’s most out-of-this-world organisations and complete challenges to receive stamps on their space maps. Each challenge has two difficulty levels, and there is a 60-minute or 120-minute course to choose from. When all of the stamps have been collected on the maps, space explorers will go in the draw to win an awesome prize pack of books from our friends at Gecko Press.

Here are five ways to make the most of your Great Scavenger Hunt experience this year…

Dress appropriately. Here’s some inspiration for your stellar costume. Space explorers need to be ready for anything, including rain or sunshine. We recommend your space-themed costume includes comfortable shoes for exploring the waterfront, as well as protection from sun or drizzle that might be forecast. And if it does rain…

…the event’s rain day is Sunday 22 February. Keep an eye on our FacebookInstagram and Twitterpages for an announcement in case of drizzle on the morning of Saturday 21 January. The announcement will be made at 8am.

Don’t forget to stop by Capital E’s MediaLab space for an awe-inspiring virtual reality journey. For an additional gold coin koha, you’ll see a whole other world with this amazing five-minute Oculus Rift and HTC Vive experience from the director of Madagascar. When martians invade our world, they’ll be greeted with a close encounter of the cuddly kind. This will be an amazing experience for young and old family members.

Be sure to take a break during your scavenger hunt to enjoy the entertainment and food on offer. There’ll be a lunchtime extravaganza under the sails at Queens Wharf from midday until 1.45pm, complete with entertainment from brass band favourites The Troubles and delicious local food trucks including The Hot Wafel and Elemental Eats. During the lunchtime festivities, there will also be prizes for the best dressed astronauts and aliens.

Don’t forget your gold coin koha to launch your trip to the final frontier!
