Three Massey University students are shedding some light on Capital E’s Halloween celebrations with their light installation. Jojo Warren, 21, Zoe Cunningham, 22, and Wiesje ten Berge, 21, gave up their holidays to take a four-week block course in light art. Their installation uses 30 large plastic bottles and more than 100 small bottles to create an immersive forest.

Cunningham said they knew straight away they wanted to incorporate waste.

“We really wanted to re-use plastic waste and show you can create something artist out of everyday rubbish,” Cunningham said.

The installation is called The Infestation. Learning how to work with lights was the tricky part, so they kept it simple, using fluorescent paint and UV lights. The group are delighted to have their installation displayed at Capital E.

“It’s a great opportunity for us and it’s cool people want something to do with our work – it’s great exposure,” Warren said.

Light installation The Infestation will be inside the Somewhere Over the Rainbow section of Capital E’s walk-in wonderland world. The event is part of Capital E’s Big Halloween Extravaganza on October 31. The installation will be display until November 12.

Capital E events co-ordinator Karen Carey said the installation worked perfectly with the rest of her vision.

“I saw images of the installation and thought it was really beautiful and perfect for what I was designing,” she said.

The Big Halloween Extravaganza is on on at Capital E and Wellington Museum on October 31 from 4pm till 8pm.
