This year, STORY STUDIO LIVE is all about Aotearoa and discovering where ākonga come from through our history and embracing te reo Māori via a huge live interactive screen. Explore the history of your town/ region’s name and other places across Aotearoa, learning the meanings behind their names.

We invite you to use this unique production as a platform to explore your local area with your ākonga.

We provide everything you need, including an MC to assist in engaging your ākonga with our performers.

This is an experience that supports learning and critical inquiry. It could be a starting point for ākonga to investigate their community history, people, and places or a landing point to conclude an inquiry process.

It links to the New Zealand Curriculum in The Arts; English; and the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum. You will discover links to your local curriculum too as our team updates every performance to include stories drawn from each touring region.

This experience encourages ākonga to share individual stories that are relevant to them and their communities and to develop a sense of people and events that have shaped the places and spaces they live in.

Suitable for year levels 3 – 8

• An immersive, interactive performance, presented by professional actors.
• A 45–50-minute professional performance experience live-streamed exclusively to your school from our studio in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
• All the equipment for the live-streamed performance will be supplied, along with our friendly technician, who will set it up before the performance starts at your school.
• An experience that links to the New Zealand Curriculum in The Arts; English; and the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum.

The Arts

The Arts – level 1-3

As they perform, analyse, and respond to different forms of drama and theatre, they gain a deeper appreciation of their rich cultural heritage and language and new power to examine attitudes, behaviours, and values.

The Story Studio Live Aotearoa team have some requirements to make it the best live-streamed performance possible at your school. 

• A staff member to meet our technician on arrival to be shown where the performance space is. 
• Provide an indoor performance space, with a minimum clearance of six-meters wide x three-meters deep for the equipment plus an area large enough to accommodate your ākonga. 
• The performance space needs to be at least three-meters high to fit the projector screen. If the roof height is lower than this the performance space minimum clearance will need to increase to six-meters wide x seven-meters deep for optimal viewing.     

• Ākonga will be sitting on the floor for the performance so no chairs need to be set up for this, just an empty space.  
• Our technician will bring and set up all the equipment required for the performance – for example, projector screen, web cameras, microphones, and sound equipment.  
• The area around the technical equipment will be off limits to ākonga for their own safety and the safety of our technician.  
• Parking for one large van, preferably close to where the performance is being held, with clear access to unload the equipment. This includes:  
  • An accessible concrete pathway and ramp to the performance space  
  • Doorway entrance 1.2 meters wide (minimum)  
  • Elevator access if necessary 

• Our technician may need some school staff to assist moving a few heavy items (about 25 kgs per item). We will let you know closer to the performance date if this help is required.  
• The ability to pull blinds/curtains across windows if it’s affecting viewing of the projector screen during the performance.  
• Provide access to four-to-five electrical power points within 10-20 metres of the performance space. We’ll bring our own power boards (multi-boxes). 
• Access to the performance area for about three hours*:   
  • At least one hour to set up prior to the performance  
  • 45-50 minutes for the performance 
  • Up to one hour to pack down after the performance and return the space to how it was 
• *Talk to the Capital E bookings team about timing if you’re booking more than one performance. 

Pricing:  

$1 per child, with a minimum charge of $100.00/performance. Teachers attend free of charge. 

Audience numbers: 

Audience numbers are up to schools’ discretion. 

Please note our performance is delivered via a 3.3 meters high x 2 meters wide screen. We advise that for performance areas where the screen will be on the floor sightlines need to be considered. We suggest a maximum of four classes when this is the case.  Where the screen can be placed on a stage or rostrum, additional numbers can be accommodated.  

Confirmation Process: 

You will be sent an initial invoice for $100.00 (minimum charge) once your booking request has been processed. The deposit must be paid within 10 working days of issue to confirm the booking. The booking is not confirmed until the deposit has been received and you have received a confirmation email from Capital E. 

Final Numbers and Payment: 

Final numbers attending will be taken on the day of the performance. Your school will be invoiced for the remaining balance following the performance to ensure accurate numbers. This will be payable by the 20th of the month following. 

We are happy for you to invite another school/group to your performance in accordance with your own COVID-19 guidelines, however, we will only invoice one school for the total numbers attending. 

Refunds and Cancellations: 

We are unable to refund deposits for bookings cancelled less than 20 working days before the performance. Any cancellations occurring prior to 20 working days before the performance must be in writing to the Capital E bookings team – [email protected]. All refunds are at the discretion of Capital E and considered on a case-by-case basis. 

Requirements for Story Studio Live Aotearoa 2022: 

By accepting these Terms and Conditions you are confirming that the school is able to meet the requirements for Story Studio Live as detailed on the website. 

National Theatre for Children and COVID-19 

Capital E’s National Theatre for Children Story Studio LIVE performances will only run under the ORANGE or GREEN settings of the COVID Protection Framework and are cancelled under the RED setting. If your school’s performance is affected by a change in settings, Capital E will contact you directly to confirm the cancellation, and where possible offer alternative dates. If your school has arranged to host other schools/education groups at your booked performance, it will be your school’s responsibility to contact and inform them of the cancellation. 

If we are unable to deliver Story Studio LIVE to your school in 2022, we will process a refund in accordance with our standard refund policy.
