Java is a vibrant Wellington based contemporary dance company. Founded in 2003 by graduates of the New Zealand School of Dance, Java Dance Company performs regularly throughout the country to rave reviews. 2008 is Java Dance Company’s fifth birthday as a professional dance company.

The people behind the performance
SACHA COPLAND, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Since graduating from the New Zealand School of Dance in 2002 Sacha has choreographed and produced Espresso (2003), Rush Hour, co-devised and performed The Platinum Connection (2004) and choreographed short works in Snapshots. Sacha also choreographs for theatre, her credits include; A Midsummer’s Night Dream (Circa Theatre 2005), Much Ado About Nothing (Summer Shakespeare 2005) and Pericles (2004). In addition to her own work Sacha’s performance experience includes Maui (Wellington 2005, Christchurch 2006).

ROSANNE CHRISTIE, DANCER Rosie graduated from the New Zealand School of Dance in 2000. After graduating she travelled to Adelaide, Australia and worked under secondment with ‘Leigh Warren and Dancers’. Since returning to New Zealand Rosie has been involved in Copland’s major works, Espresso (2003) and Rush Hour (2005) as well as choreographing and performing in Snapshot 05, Snapshots 06 and Giraffes Can’t Dance (2005). Rosie has performed at schools all around New Zealand with Java. Rosie is a founding member of the company.

EMMA JOHNSTON, DANCER graduated from the NZ School of Dance in 2007. After a seconding to Java’s production of Itchy Feet Emma was offered a full time position with the company. In her time at the New Zealand School of Dance Emma worked with many kiwi and international choreographers including Michael Parmenter, Jane Pirani Daniel Belton, Malia Johnston, Anne Dewy, Sacha Copeland and Carol Wellman. Early in 2007, Emma traveled to Australia where she was seconded to the Australian Dance Theatre.

NICOLE COSGROVE, DESIGNER is a set and costume designer for theatre. She is also a scenic painter and model technician for miniatures in film. She has worked with Capital E before, designing the sets and costume for Boss of the Pool, The Happy Prince and Jellybean.

PETER WILSON, CO-DEVISER Peter has been creating theatre work for young audiences for over twenty years. He was artistic director of Spare Parts Theatre in Perth Western Australia before moving to Wellington in 1997. His works have performed in all major centres in Australia and toured to Japan, China, Canada, USA, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea and Europe. He is currently artistic director of Capital E National Theatre for Children a position he has held since 1997. During that time he has created a large body of works that have toured nationally and internationally, including Boxes – Hobart (2006), Songs of the Sea – Victorian Arts Centre, Melbourne (2007) and Paper Shaper – Singapore International Children’s Theatre Festival (2008). In 2006 he created the dance piece Into the Rem Zone for Footnote Dance Company which toured nationally in 2006 and 2007.
