End Game. 2010 National Tour

A compelling look at a child-parent relationship played out in extraordinary circumstances, written by New Zealand playwrights Rachel Callinan and Kate Morris.

Alex and his mother Rosie don't really get along and live separate lives online when a twist of fate transforms them into computer game versions of themselves. This is not going to be a typical school day.

With inventive staging, a magical score by Gareth Farr and a script by two New Zealand playwrights - this is a truthful, funny and telling look at a family finding their way back home.

Ideal for 8 to 14 year-olds the play offers a lot of scope for teachers and students to consider a range of key competencies and values.

Directed by Leo Gene Peters
Composed by Gareth Farr
Designed by Brian King
Lighting by Nathan McKendry

Education Information
End Game comes with a curriculum-linked Teachers Resource packed with activities for both before and after your theatre experience. You will be provided with a PIN code to download this resource upon confirmation of booking.

End Game is particularly relevant for Years 4 – 9 and the following learning areas:

Values:

Excellence
The challenges Alex and Rosie face are mythical in proportion but require real-life solutions and courage. Is Alex's will to win going to be enough this time?

Innovation, Inquiry & Curiosity
Thrown into an alien world, Alex now needs all the skills he's learnt gaming to succeed. A true digital native, his ability to think creatively might just hold the key to getting them both out.

Respect
End Game is a modern fable spanning two different generations and worlds, with a storyline that hinges on different aspects of respect.

Key competencies:

Thinking
The thinking skills Alex has developed gaming prove useful in the play, echoing research that argues gaming is a powerful learning tool. End Game offers interesting ways to study this competency.

Managing Self
Students are encouraged to explore what motivates Alex and Rosie's choices as they face a catalogue of challenges that require resourcefulness and resilience.

Relating to Others
In the opening scene it becomes clear that Alex and his mother struggle to relate to each other or listen. End Game quickly demonstrates just how hard it is for them to work together and what the results are.
